十年前两个留守儿童燕子、陈路和年轻企业家张老师的故事。两个15岁的女孩都在贵州某乡村中学读初三，张老师是年轻企业家，因为热心于公益事业，独自前往贵州某乡村中学任职音乐老师。由于两人想参加学校张老师组织的合唱团，一个女孩有“百鸟衣”，而另外一个女孩没有百鸟衣，他们即将面临选择。同时，还要面临另外一个选择的是陈路，因为家庭环境的原因，她想放弃学业。作为朋友的燕子，始终在劝说陈路放弃想法，并在张老师的支持下回归学业。一无所有的两人相互依偎取暖，姐妹情深让逆境中的他们依旧乐观开朗。然而，由于命运的转折，陈路最终不得不离开了燕子。十五年后，两人再次重逢，却早已物是人非，燕子通过自己的努力在城市站稳脚跟后，也像当年的张老师一样，开始帮助一个又一个的留守儿童……。"They never fail."
