One day, they are tasked with cleaning a house where there were three dead bodies inside. Their job is to clean the corpses that have rotted. When they arrived there, they found that there are strange things happening and then they discover a strange book.。故事发生在第二次世界大战刚刚结束之际，卡罗尔（埃琳诺·帕克 Eleanor Parker 饰）和保罗（让-皮埃尔·奥蒙特 Jean-Pierre Aumont 饰）的外遇恋情被卡罗尔的丈夫沃尔特（比尔·特拉弗斯 Bill Travers 饰）发现了，沃尔特给了卡罗尔两个选择，要么和他一起前往位于中国的一个非常偏僻的村庄之中，那里霍乱横行，要么就离婚。最终，卡罗尔在无奈之中和沃尔特一起上路了。 在中国，卡罗尔结识了自由不羁的提姆（乔治·桑德斯 George Sanders 饰），并且通过他在修道院里谋了一份差事，卡罗尔和沃尔特之间的感情也随着时间的推移而渐渐修复，一切都看似在往井井有条的方向发展，可是，在这个节骨眼上，沃尔特染上瘟疫去世了，与此同时，卡罗尔发现自己怀孕了。。
